The first episode had 22 million viewers. It premiered as a series regular in April and lasted six episodes until the end of the season in mid-May. The first season had seven episodes, which presented the main characters of the show. The second season began on Sept. 23, 1999, and has suffered from competition from other shows. After only two episodes of the second season, Family Guy was taken out of programming and shown on an irregular basis since then. The series returned in March 2000 for completion by transmitting the second season contains 21 episodes. The third season of 22 episodes beginning on July 11, 2001.
On November 19, 2003, the channel Entertainment Television and its website reported that Fox was negotiating with the creator of Family Guy Seth MacFarlane to revive the show with 35 new episodes. On February 27, 2004 in an interview with IGN, Seth MacFarlane confirmed that Family Guy will resume production. MacFarlane provided further information in an interview with the BBC.
